SEX SELLS; OR DOES IT?

SEX SELLS; OR DOES IT?                               By Lady Phoenix

Sex sells is the oldest adage in advertising. We associate sex with mostly everything in today's world.

You see it every single day infiltrating your computer, tv, ipod, and cell phone screens. Plastered on billboards, bus stops, on buses, and the side of buildings. Companies want to tap into your subconscious mind, by displaying this imagery and hoping that it prompts you to associate sex with their products thereby causing you to purchase it.

Go to any of the social networking sites and you will see an array of hotties, scantily women posing, posturing, insinuating sexual things, just to sell unrelated products like real estate, a book, their music, hearing aides, or something so far unrelated to sex as in a product that helps you clean your clothes better, could fail. Abusing your audience's attention is a dangerous thing. Showing skin to get attention and then trying to sell completely unrelated products can be disastrous to say the least.

Does this type of advertising really pay off the dividends that these advertisers whether corporate or individual are expecting?? Some do benefit, but a large majority of others do not. You need to be careful and think how nudity is sufficient towards a targeted market, no matter how free thinking of a society they may be. You need to take into consideration that everyone in that market is not going to see the advertising in the same vain, so focus on what matters to you as a company, the commodity or product you are selling, and how it will affect you in the long run.

saw this while browsing through the sight. its a great topic. its true. but not only does this should be directed towards females as well. these artist out here feel as though half naked women sell the music and most times thats not the case. the media as a whole needs to wake up. love the topic good work lady phoenix

I agree. Countless ads are permitted to do this and we wonder why children are overly interested in sex. I know ads aren't the only source but that doesn't make it okay.

If a product has nothing to do with sex, there's no need to make advertisements sexual. But if a product has something to do with sex(i.e. condoms), there's no problem.

I love sex, I see nothing wrong with using it for profit. You have to make money somehow. There are many ads that make fun of sex instead of being serious about it. Americans are prudes about nudity anyway.

selling sex in an ad that has nothing to do with sex is lame. instead of being creative, advertisers go for what is easy. they think, "hey, everyone loves sex, lets use that to hold peoples attention." the truth is, like everything else it gets old.

i agree with jon that americans are prudes but that is why trying to sell sex in every ad often backfires. advertisers ought to really research who they are selling to and figure out what catches their attention.

Sex definitely sells when it comes to alcohol and rap music. But when it comes to other things like food and real estate it doesn't. And it's sad because the models in these ads are making pennies compared to the millions these ad execs are making.

Well i love women rappers who are rappers, i dont dig verbal porn. aAwoman who can spit without giving us a tour of her sex life is a jewel. I appreciate all true M.C.'s, but keep it open to all rappers not models and pre madonnas who need to feed their egos with sexcapades.
(i have a 5 year old daughter, set an example)
