ARTISTS NEED TO MIND THEIR DAMN “BUSINESS”!!!!!

ARTISTS NEED TO MIND THEIR DAMN “BUSINESS”!!!!!               By Lady Phoenix

During my short dwelling in the industry, I see so many artists today focused on their music and not placing more emphasis on their "BUSINESS". More than half of artists today are in a non-PROFITTING status where the distributor and/or label have spent more money than the album releases have earned. This moves onto the next album, and then the next, until the artist is so much in a hole, it seems they will never make any money from their music. I also see a lot of artists who don't even have a clue what publishing is, why they are owed mechanical royalties upfront, or any other crucial information that will insure they collect all monies from the revenue streams out here today. Why aren't these artists interested in knowing the business? Awhile back Bell, Biv, Devoe  (BBD) and TLC were on the "Monique" show and talked about them being ripped off and not receiving what they thought they should have gotten from their art, because they didn't take the time to pay attention to the "BUSINESS".

Lesson from my wonderful mentor: Find yourself a music professional that knows the business and proves to you to be a trustworthy source of information and resources. Your partner "Junior" (you know everyone knows a Junior) who knows no more than you about the industry, is not the idea of a music professional who you should be linking up with, no matter how close you two may be.

There are over 60 items on the list of sources of revenue streams for your music!! Are you as an artist tapping into all of them?? Some of the most common are: performance royalties, mechanical licensing, ring tones, use of a song in a motion picture, use of a song in a television series, use of a song in an advertising campaign, digital download license, video game music license. Being armed with information is being a step ahead of the scammers, sharks, and cheats!!

Are you also into the NEW MEDIA of the business: “Internet service providers, digital rights management, podcasting, blogs, compression, downloads, wireless, streaming, subscription and non-subscription services, MP3, hyper-distribution, encryption, decryption keys, platforms, interactive music, portability, mobile devices, watermarking, fingerprinting — these words and many more form the vocabulary of the new music business. SO I ADVISE ALL WHO READ THIS, RESEARCH WHAT I HAVE SPIT IN YOUR EAR AND LEARN ABOUT YOUR DAMN BUSINESS.

Couldnt agree more and thats why I respect people like FloRida and Rick Ross. Do you know how much money they get from the BUSINESS aspect? FloRida getting crazy cash over Step It Up & Disney Soundtracks...Ross tapping into TV and Nike Commercials [BOOM!] ....Like its crazy its not just about getting your music on the radio...or having your "homies" ( a term used loosely in the industry) ride around bumpin it. People need to plug in to the Business side and really get whats out here! Some people get it....some people dont...

Wow a woman that knows her info. On a serious note I agree that it is sad to see wonderful artists such as the lucrative TLC get Bamboozled do to poor management and lack of knowledge of the business. Being that artists are too hungry to get signed they end up in deals that leave them tied to a slave ship for the rest of their career. I hope other young artists read this because this is a must know. Thanks for the breath of fresh air Lady P.

Heard about the blog from a good friend of mine. I know first hand from experience when I know first hand that knowing my business would play a tremendous role in my future success. True indeed I learned the hard way about being tied into slave deals but it made me wiser on how to approach my new situation. These new artists need to jump on this. Tight Work Phoenix. Tight work

i see what you are saying but i disagree a little bit. i dont think not knowing whats going on is the complete blame for an artists failure but also its the management team and lack of experience as well. ill just agree to disagree.

I COULD NOT AGREE WITH YOU MORE,I FEEL YOU TOOK THE WORDS OUT OF MY MIND, I JUST DON'T SPEAK ABOUT IT BECAUSE I RATHER JUST DO IT AND SHOW OTHERS HOW IS DONE THEN TO TELL THESE "LAMES" HOW IS DONE, BUT SPEEKING YOUR MIND I LIKE THAT AND YOU MIGHT BE THE REASON SOMEONE OR MANY MAKE IT BIG....

I certainly don't know much about the music business, but this info goes for any industry. If you are serious about what you do you should to aspire to be knowledgeable about every aspect of your field.

Being that I have been a Celebrity DJ for over 15years I see what you are talking about on an everyday basis. So don't let that one negative individual affect what you do. It is clear and obvious you know what you are talking so disregard the nonsense. Keep your head up Ms. Phoenix.

Artists aren't the only ones that need to kno they buisness, any and everyone in the entertainment needs to. This goes for actors, comedians, models, producers, etc. My homegirl's a model and she thinks all she gotta do is take pictures. She don't kno nothing bout creating a brand or none of that. I'm gon' make sure she read this.

I agree with Jazzzy and Lady Leo. Whatever your business is you need to be knowledgeable. I'm an aspiring author and it's so many things I'm learning right now about getting a book published that it's crazy. Good stuff Lady Phoenix. Your blog is a new favorite of mine hun.

I was wondering what the buzz about this blog was about so I had to check it out expecially to hear about it and im in Atlanta. I read it thoroughly. Even though there is a little more information needed like Lady Leo pointed out, I still strongly agree with everything that you are saying. Many groups have come to a demise because of them not knowing their business such as the infamous EPMD, NWA, TLC, Onyx, MOB, SWV - just a few. There are upcoming artists right now who are dealing with the samething because they are not informed about whats going on with them. They dont realize that they are the product thats being marketed therefore they should have everything in order. This blog would be an eye opener to a lot of young cats out there. On the behalf of a future career you may have saved, I say thank you,

I see what the buzz is now. it seems as though this author is the fire on this blog. Well being that I am involved in the music industry on the marketing stand point I totally agree with what you are saying. Its sad to see how many people just dont know the basics. An individual like me can come in and take advantage of someone who is hungry for success but knows anything. But i too like you choose to educate. I see that my friend wasnt lying about you. A woman that take time to educate herself as well as others. Hope to meet this Lady Phoenix OWT
